DownCaliforniaSFca1889

This 29"x41" watercolor is the same view as the Down California ca. 1938. The brick Church On the corner of what was then DuPont Street is Old Saint Mary's Cathedral. It was completely destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1906. The old bricks sere salvaged , and the church was rebuilt brick by brick. Dupont Street has been renamed Grant Street, and theis beautiful panorama is now obscured by Tall office buildings. This painting is in the private collection of Frank Hefernan of Gallagher and Hefernan Insurance. They are the underwriters of the insurance of the entire San Francisco Archdiocese including Old Saint Mary's Cathedral.
