Slow Boat to Chinle oil, 8 by 10 inches on archival canvas panel, was finished February 22, 2005. It is the fourteenth painting in my series titled Unforgettable. Sometimes referred to as prairie schooners, covered wagons were the Navajo all-purpose vehicles up until the last half of the twentieth century and were a common sight on the reservation. Today, most of the old schooners have been replaced by pick-up trucks and SUVs. This sight on the road to Chinle evoked a memory of a place where life was lived at a more leisurely pace and brought to mind the words of the 1948 song by Frank Loesser, Id like to get you on a slow boat to China, all to myself alone. hence the title Slow Boat to Chinle. © 2005 John Watt - artist retains all rights to any reproduction of this original art.
