Painting of a photograph of my great-grandmother, who lived in West friesland, The Netherlands. Wearing folkloristic costumes was common habit in that area in those days (1870). Underneath the cap the women had clean shaven heads. They considered nice hair as vanity. To compensate for the loss of their hair, they wore two small braids of black hair on their forehead. Poor granny.
