According to early Church tradition, while Christ carried His Cross, a pious women feeling sympathy for our Lord, jumped from the crowd of onlookers, and took off her veil and wiped His Holy Face. An image of His Face was left on the veil. She was given the name, "Veronica" which is a combination of two words in Latin, "vera" (true) and "icon" (image). Her name means "true image of Christ". This ancient relic is stored in a vault in Rome and is displayed occasionally on Good Friday.
