Venice Carnival. Mr Punch Mask

It is my favorite Venetian mask. There were two guys wearing Mr. Punch costumes with the most notable item which is a large hooked nose. They slowly walked around Saint Mark's square with their little lanterns every night. Long white baggy blouses, waist leather strap, large amorphous pants and oddly elongated cap. These characters of the Italian Commedia dell'arte, a special kind of street theater presentation, originated in Italy in the 16 century. Can you imagine medieval shows with Harlequin, Columbine, Pierrot, Pulcinella and the other characters, each of whom was distinguished by a certain character, style, behavior and manner of dress, entertained their perceptions of urban residents, enjoyed incredible popularity and several centuries have become popular pets. I would love to enjoy the show!
