Unloading the herring-catch on the beach

Untill the beginning of the 19th century many fishing-villages in the Netherlands had no harbour and the fishermen had to unload their catch on the beach. The image shows a type of boats called "bomschuiten", literally translated : bomb-barges. I could not trace where the name is coming from. A cheap kind of wooden fishing- vessel in use along the coast of Holland. Image size: 260 x 360 mm
