Renaissance Portrait 5

24'X36" oil on canvas One of my self study attempts is portraiture during the Renaissance and particularly the religious portrait works since these inspired the greatest painters and sculptors of the times and some believe in art history itself. The technical proficiency required seems too tedious for many artists today however I learned that under painting in egg and tempera is a simplification which the masters used for practical reasons like color harmonies and tonal orchestration. I believe the best way to understand painting is to attempt to practice the methods of the masters like one does with musical instruments and sounds. In this case I painted this in 1993 and do not remember who the artist was who's painting I was studying. In any case this painting was stolen by a burglar in my studio and it was unfinished as you can see.
