Several weeks ago we were in Omaha, Nebraska for a weekend get-away and we stopped by to visit the Durham Museum of History. There were many interesting and educational exhibits, but one that caught my eye was one showing various old coins and currency. The grandson of our friends is very much into coin collecting and finding all the information he can about coins. One of the coins in the exhibit was an 1804 silver dollar. There is quite a story behind this coin. I photographed both sides of the coin knowing that their grandson would be interested in seeing it. Our friends decided to commission me to do a colored pencil painting of the cone faces for his 15th birthday. This is my rendering of this most interesting coin based on the photographs that I took. Both paintings were done on Dura-lar polyester film using Faber-Castell Polychromos and Prismacolor Verithin pencils. The size of each piece is 5 X 7 inches. Even if you are not particularly interested in old coins, Google 1804 silver dollar. You will be surprised by the story behind it.
