Ann Arbor Michigan: State Street At Dusk

This is a picture that I took in Ann Arbor Michigan the day before Thanksgiving in 2002. It is one of my favorite of my photos of all time. It was the first time I had had Thanksgiving in Michigan since 1957. It was 30 degrees and a light snow was falling. What pleases me so much about this image is that the violet blue light of dusk is complemented so beautifully by the and oranges of the internal lights of the storefront interiors and the great focal point of the State Theater marquee at the center piece of this photograph. This picture brings back the fondest memories of my childhood when we would go to visit my Uncle Chris and Aunt Elena in there magnificent home just off of Washtenaw Road. It was built by a bootlegger during prohibition and had a labyrinthian layout that fascinated not only me and my sister , but all of my other cousins that visited there in their youth. My Uncle Chris owned a famous restarurant in Ann Arbor called the Little Brown Jug which is now a sports bar in the same location. Ann Arbor is a must for Barbara and me every time we visit Michigan.

A wonderful photo.... and you captured it at the perfect time of day to show off the warm street decoration lights and storefront lights against the cool oncoming dusk! This photo just glows!

Artist Reply: Thanks Julie, I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to get some of these photos. This brings back all of the beauty of the winter months of my time in Michigan and my time at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester New York. The next one of Ann arbor is coming up soon.
