San Francisco: The Green Street Wharf ca. 1889

This is the Green Street Wharf, a bygone scene that existed along what is the Embarcadero close to the present day Pier 39 development. What caught my attention while studying the old photographs was the visual effect of the steam plumes that emanated from the myriad of small steam engines that performed the heavy lifting tasks for the stevedore's. I used the sails with the sun shining from behind the sails in the afternoon to frame the activity on the docks and to create an interesting composition.

Superb, Stanton! Your choice of creating a backlit painting really added to the drama! Amazing authenticity... all the details of the rigging, etc! It is like looking back in time....
