It's been twenty years since I saw his face
And just as long as he's seen mine
Years of trauma have not erased
The love that has lasted through time

He said all the things that he could not know
Were exactly what I needed to hear
Made me realise the love that he'd shown
Was meaningful, heartfelt and dear

He wanted to protect me from the abuse of my life
Way back when I was still young
But his circumstances prevented the fight
I let him go because the pain of it stung

But now as my memory reminds me again
I am stronger and more able to cope
I embrace him and remember how he was my friend
How through darkness he was my light of hope
