THE CROSSING

Original oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard: copyright 2001 Patrick Pierson The design for this painting includes an extreme example of foreshortening with respect to Christ's right hand seemingly reaching outward from the surface of the image toward you, the viewer, as well as the cross that bears Jesus high above the earth (in fact, the very place in which he was crucified); Christ has pulled his left arm away from the cross to reach out and touch the hand of God, thus the title of the painting - THE CROSSING. Also, the supernovae behind Jesus appeared in the night sky at the time of the crucifixion. Visit www.PlanetZootopia.com

OMG, Patrick! It's as if you were sitting in my head... In my old drafts there is an almost identical crucifix theme, with EXACTLY the same composition, angle and perspective -- although, the globe in my version was very small and entirely visible, also, there was no supernova and no "Michelangelo hands". Of course, you had no chance to see the draft -- nobody has ever seen it except me. It's just a coincidence, but I'm shocked nonetheless. Another amazing thing about it: the draft was made somewhere between 2000-2002, approximately the same period as your painting. :)

Artist Reply: Yes, my good friend, Rezo! It must be that we are twin sons of different mothers. Stranger still, my first sketches for THE CROSSING show Golgotha as a human skull with the cross sticking out of it as the skull cracks. Way too creepy. Anyway, what a weird coincidence! I wish I could visit you in your studio in Georgia, share some ideas with you (maybe steal a few, too), and talk with you about this strange world we live in and our places in it. Hey, I told my 24-year-old son about you and your artwork and where you live and how we met through ArtWanted, and he said, "Dad, that's the coolest thing yet!" I agreed with him. Thanks, Rezo, for taking time to express your thoughts and share them with me. Stay strong.
