Ascend Through Time

Taking inspiration from Tukutuku panels, the vertical points of the Harakeke weave are representative of the Niho Taniwha – Teeth of the Dragon, as seen on Tukutuku and also the weaving on the hem of Maori cloaks. It is symbolic of the lineage of chiefs as well as the families within a tribe. Thus the ascension into the flaming Toetoe plumes gives a sense of this symbolism and the challenges which face all those who choose greater aspirations in life. © 2009 Susan Haywood Smith
