Once an Ocean

The stark contrasts between the land of my birth and the land that shelters me today were most obvious when I first arrived in this familiar yet vastly different country. Through this print I have sought to capture a simple, yet vivid representation of the pressures upon our fragile environment. It seeks to capture the timelessness of change which will continue to see ages come and go, and yet common themes remain. A land once flooded by the sea has now become a sunburnt and parched desert of deep earthen tones. The only reminder of the cool blue waters which once quenched this arid place are the patterns in the petrified mud and the odd fossil resting on the boundless sand; a lone testament to the changes which nature, alongside man, has wrought upon the land both then and now. © 2009 Susan Haywood Smith
