This image was inspired by New Zealand’s “Treaty of Waitangi”. Historically this was the founding document of New Zealand society responsible for many grievances over land and fisheries rights. Below are images inspired by Maori Chiefs signatory to this Treaty. The leaf is a New Zealand native Kauri. Like an olive branch, the Kauri leaf represents the offering of peace. The red of the leaf is symbolic of the conflict that occurred in the 1860’s New Zealand Land Wars. © 2009 Susan Haywood Smith
