Harmony

The palm in this image is a Nikau, a tree native to New Zealand. Its strong sculptural form is prevalent in the bush surrounding where I grew up. It is a very proud and majestic tree, qualities which I hoped to capture in this piece. The Nikau is printed onto tissue and then overlaid on the image below. This creates a translucency allowing the image beneath to come through. The red and brown images are harakeke (flax). Harakeke was used for both decorative art forms and functionality in Maori society. It was traditionally woven to make kete (bags) and clothing and had many other practical uses. Harakeke played an integral role to Maori survival.
