The Challenge Begins

This print seeks to symbolise “Te Wero” or Challenge that precedes the arrival of a visiting tribe or guests onto “Whenua Maori – Maori Land”. The “Taiaha” represents the “Wairua Toa - Spirit of the Warrior” who undertakes the challenge to ascertain the intentions of the visitors; the Spiral or “Koru” signifies the intertwining forces of life and death, and the possible decent into chaos, alongside the ascension towards new hope; finally the “Ponga - fern frond” is curled upon itself reflecting a defensive posture, as well as representing the “Tika – Peace Offering” which is placed before the visitors. Furthermore, this piece seeks to reflect the intertribal wars of the Maori people since their colonisation of “Aotearoa – New Zealand”. As well as the struggle for overall rule of New Zealand between the British colonialists and the Maori Chiefs, since the 19th Century.
