Artist Reply: Hi Cindy, Many thanks. In answer to your question, a group of Augustinian canons were given this land by Lady Alice de Romille in 1154 and the priory was constructed over several hundred years until its dissoltion by King Henry VIII in 1539 when the canons were expelled, the lead stripped from the roofs and the valuables and furnishings carried away to swell the king's coffers.
