On the first evening of the ninth lunar month, Phuket Vegetarian Festival particiapants enter a Chinese Buddhist temple and under go rituals and ceremonies for merit making and purification. To exhibit the power of spirit over flesh participants insert various objects into their bodies. During the festival celebacy and a vegan lifestyle are observed.
