Red Shafted Northern Flicker

The Northern Flicker is distinctive in its species. This is a western flicker, the eastern flicker has yellow where the northern has red. Where east meets west along the Great Plains, the two will hybridize. They both have a noticable black crescent shaped bib. The red shafted flicker resides year round, whereas the yellow shafted are present only from fall to spring. Taken in my backyard, Mission, B.C.

WHAT A GREAT CAPTURE!

Artist Reply: Thanks Emily, they are so big and boisterous, that they are hard to ignore, much like a bluejay behaves.
