1985. This is a huge statue of the Buddha in a reclining posture. It is gold plated with mother-of-pearl inlays for the eyes and the bottom of the feet (on the right side of my photo you cans see the bottome of the toes). This statue represents the Buddha's passage into nirvana. It is 49 feet high and 151 feet long. To gain a perspective on the magnitude of this statue, it is the same size as the Statue of Liberty from her feet to the top of her torch. The temple that this statue is housed in is called Wat Pho, and it is both the largest (200 acres) and the oldest temple in Bangkok.
