A Uniform World

©Seth F.Weaver,Sr. 2007. I drew this editorial cartoon for my daughter, Emily' who is a newspaper journalist. This cartoon was not used with the editorial. This was about a middle school principal who decided that the best way to control bad behavior and boost grades was to put all the students in uniforms. Being an artist and being creative this was like Hitler and his Nazis to me. So here's the cartoon. Thanks for looking Seth.

my 17 year old son would really appreciate this one seth. this past sept. the parents got to vote if they wanted uniforms and was strongly defeated(much to his glee). i 'm in a position to play both sides of the issue. as a very free spirited teen and a strong advocate for artistic and individual freedoms of expression i actually opted to go to a uniformed school for my final year of high school. it was a new experience for me but something the rest of the kids there had grown up with. it might have leveled the playing field ever so slightly but they all found a way to make their individuality known in no uncertain terms. when i showed up for the 1st day of school i still hadn't received my uniform. it was the hight of the hippy period and i showed up looking like a blend of mother earth/ brightly coloured gypsy/ mary quant wiaf. it made quite an impact and whether i was was wearing a uniform from that time on or not everybody new who i was and where i was coming from. the biggest thing for me was not having to figure out what i was wearing every day. years later i have always strongly encouraged my son to be an individual and to fight for his freedom of expression and yet again there was this small part of me being tempted to vote in favour (don't think he'd ever forgive me if i had) but sanity prevailed .

Artist Reply: Thank you Sheila for the comment. I agree! If you can see from the cartoon no matter what they wear they will be individuals in spirit and expression.
