I must say this is the strangest hike we have ever been on. I wouldn't have known about it, but my sister had gone two weeks before, (she hardly ever hikes), and insisted that we had to do this. The tunnel is 2 mi. long thru the middle of a mountain and, as the inscription says, was built from 1912-1914. The railroad used to come through here starting in Seattle and ending at the top of Snoqualmie Pass, at a very popular ski resort. The ski resorts are more numerous now and the Interstate is the way to get there, but back in the good old days, this was the thing to do for anyone who was anyone. After the first 100 ft or so you are in total darkness and all you can see at the other end is a tiny pin point of light. Of course it is a must to have a flashlight. There are indents in the walls every 100 ft. or so, to escape a train, with remnants of electrical wiring for long-gone lights. There is water seeping thru the ceiling and walls the entire length and all sorts of weird algae and fungi hanging everywhere. Two miles is a long walk in the dark and we hardly came upon anyone else, so we talked and sang as to not get creeped out. It was weird fun, but if we ever do it again, we will bring bikes....less time in the dark. Oh yeah, I have no idea what this flower is, but it was found among white daisies at the trailhead.
