The New Arrivals: San Francisco Yerba Buena Cove

This is a 29"x 41"watercolor of Yerba Buena Cove, shortly after the discovery of gold in California. At this time San Francisco was experiencing extremely rapid growth. The water front was changing so fast that any accurate historic record of how things actually looked is im possible. There was a major fire that changed the city and water front on the average of every six months along with construction that was going on at a feverish pace. By about 1860 Yerba Buena Cove had been completely filled in, and the Bus Terminal stands where once ships were berthed that brought the new arrivals in search of their fortunes. In the background is Telegraph Hill where Coit Tower now stands. The paddle wheeled steamers across the cove were used to transport the the miners to the gold fields inland around Sutter's Mill.
