The Lockport Fives ca. 1864

This is a 29"x41" watercolor shows the five step locks at Lockport New York on the Erie Canal at the time of the Civil War. When the locks were completed these locks enabled barge traffic to traverse the Niagra Escarpment. When the locks were completed they were considered to be among the seven engeineering wonders of the world. Today the locks are a set of double locks much larger in scale than the originals to accomodate the increased size of barges working the canal.
