Los Angeles: 2nd & Broadway ca. 1886

This a 29"x41"watercolor was the second watercolor of this size that I completed, and was painted in 1986. I had been painting in watercolor exclusively for two years. It is a view which looks south on Broadway just north of the corner of 2nd St. shortly after the city of Los Angeles competed its horse drawn trolley system. In those days the streets were dirt and sprayed with oil to keep the dust down. The California Bank Building is seen on the southwest corner. Across the street halfway between 2nd and 3rd Street a tower can be seen behind the Episcopal Church on the southeast corner of 2nd and Broadway. That is the tower of the old Los Angeles City Hall which was replaced by the new City Hall in 1928 and is still in use today. The present City Hall is the building which was the one that Superman was able to leap in a single bound. The style of architecture of the Old City Hall can still be found on the campus of the my alma mater University of Southern California in a number of buildings on campus.

Excellent work, Stanton. Your colour is wonderful and evocative of the era, and the perspective is spot on.
