Climbing California: San Francisco ca. 1889

This is a view of Knob Hill from the California and Kearney Sts. terminus of the Callifornia Street Railroad Company. The view looks up to Old St. Mary's Church and beyond. Old St. Mary's Church is at the of Grant and California and is the entrance to Chinatown. In 1889 it Brant St was named Dupont St. The interesting thing about the stores in San Francisco was the great number of tobacco shops and Caltholic Book Stores. The large number of Italian and Irish immigrants gave San Francisco one of the largest Roman Catholic population in the country. Another fascinating fact about San Francisco was the business directory in 1889 was that the businesses were leisted by the race and ethnicity of the owners. This is soomething that would not be imaginable by todays standards.
