In Portugal, on November 11, we celebrate Saint Martin's day, the people cook chestnuts in several ways, they prove the wine in the wine cellars, they drink water-foot and jeropiga (beverage of unfermented fruit juice, brandy and sugar, considerate poor wine). In the second photo, the simpatic Mr. Serafim let to photograph me him photos of it's occupation of selling chestnuts in the center of Lisbon, in the Avenida da Liberdade (Avenue of the Freedom). Exist a legend that justifies the fact exists of on this day the time to be always hot and with a radiant sun: In a stormy day it went São Martinho, valiant soldier, set up in it's horse, when he saw an almost nude beggar, shivering of cold, that extended it the supplicant and cold hand. S. Martinho didn't hesitate: it stopped the horse, was put affectionately it's hand in the one of the poor and, soon after, with the sword it cut to the middle it's soldier cape, giving half to the beggar. And, in spite of not well wrapped up and of torrentially raining, he got ready to continue its road, full of happiness. But, all of a sudden, the storm came undone, the sky was limpid and a sun of Summertime flooded the light earth and heat. Is said that God, so that if it didn't turn off of the men's memory the act of kindness practiced by the Saint, every year, in that same time, it ceases for some days the cold time and the sky and the earth they smile with the blessing of a hot and miraculous sun.
