Navajo Grandstand oil, 10 by 8 inches on archival canvas panel, was finished January 11, 2005. It is the eleventh painting in my series titled Unforgettable. This scene was captured at a Navajo rodeo in Monument Valley in 1959. There were no fences, pens, corrals or stands, so the participants and audience parked their trucks and wagons in long rows on either side of flat stretch of ground, to create the arena. All of the events then were staged between this gauntlet. Much more important than the actual events, was the opportunity to socialize, share some jokes, and get caught up on all the latest gossip. If one looks closely, one will see 14 individual portraits. What each one is saying, I leave to the viewers imagination, but Im sure its not much different than what one might hear in the grandstands of any rodeo today. © 2005 John Watt artist retains all copyrights and rights to any reproduction.
