Minute men trained more frequently than the militia (2 or 3 times a week) and were paid 1 shilling per drill for this serious time commitment. The Militia trained only once every few months (on average) and were paid only if called out beyond their town or as part of an expedition. Minute Men kept their arms and equipment with them at all times and were ready to march at a minute's warning...hence their name.
