When I start, I use my trusty overhead projector to get started and make about 20 little "scratches" that let me know, when I tack the board onto my easel, where the physical planes should be and the spacial relationships are. Then I can go freehand and spend a quiet afternoon doing the art while looking at the source material over to the side.
