The baroque abbey-basilica of Grimbergen

This churh was a part of the abbey of Grimbergen, the construction started in 1640 and the building was ready to be consecrated in 1700. However the church was never finished. If you compare the aquarel with the small image, as insert, of the original project of those days, you can see that the splendid top, aswell as the imposing back-front never were builded. However, together with the imposing interior, it stays one of the most superbs examples of early baroque-style in the low- lands of Europe. The aquarel shows the basilica somewhere half previous century, because today the trees on the foreground are replaced by low builded appartments.
