The Lesson

"The Lesson" A few summers ago, my wife, Marcy, and I were making our way to Banff and Lake Louise up in Canada. On the way, we felt a strong urge to pull over and examine the landscape. Lo and Behold, an extraordinary event was taking place near a stream, mostly hidden under cover of the forest. After observing for several minutes and verifying our findings with wildlife books we carried with us, we discovered that the birds we were ovserving were indeed an adult Bald eagle and an immature Bald eagle standing on a mammal carcass, with a raven hopping around them. By obesrving the body language of the eagles, The adult appeared to be prompting the juvenile to eat from the carcass--a skill the juvenile would need in order to survive since eagles do scavenge occasionally. As The raven was hopping around the two eagles, waiting for his/her turn at the carcass, The eagles appeared to pay no noticeable attention to the raven. In fact, in human terms, one might say the eagles exhibited great patience with the raven. This is surely not your "typical eagle scene" -- with the eagles in majestic flight or perched high above the treetops. or on a mountain top. This, and the fact that this scene could not be casually observed with the naked eye, is what makes this painting so meaningful to me. It is my hope that all who view this painting attain an appreciation of this experience.
