Heceta Head Lighthouse

"On the spectacular cliffs of the Oregon coast, stands the lighthouse at Heceta head, named for Spanish explorer Don Bruno de Heceta who first sighted this scenic area. Built in 1894, it boasts an English made first-order prismatic lens, which has never failed, even when transferred from oil lamps to electricity in the 1960's."

Artist comment: "This beautiful lighthouse is one of my favorites. It's light can be seen for many miles as you drive the coastline of Oregon. I enjoyed researching, photographing, sketching, and painting this historic site. I set the horizon at the top third and the angle of the hillside made a nice diagonal counterpoint. With oil paint on canvas, I painted the sky, water, and tree covered cliff. I then carefully painted the tower and buildings, paying close attention to the details of the lens and windows."
