The word "sarcophagus" comes from the Greek sarx meaning "flesh", and phagein meaning "to eat", hence sarkophagus means "flesh-eating"; from the phrase lithos sarkophagos. Since lithos is Greek for stone, lithos sarcophagos means 'flesh eating stone'.
