Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922) was an eminent scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone. Bell's father, grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf, profoundly influencing Bell's life's work.[1] His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first US patent for the telephone in 1876.[N 1] In retrospect, Bell considered his most famous invention an intrusion on his real work as a scientist and refused to have a telephone in his study.[3] Many other inventions marked Bell's later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils and aeronautics. In 1888, Alexander Graham Bell became one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society.[4] Bell has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. A stunning portrait with such depth and humanity in those eyes. I always enjoy your descriptions with your work. My Pic-of-the-Day!

Artist Reply: Thanks so much, Seth! I have to confess... Ive been "going cheap" on the paper for the daily sketches. I got the will and kate commission and thought... WOW... I need to be using smooth bristol paper. It makes getting in the detail so much easier!

Wow- The whole portrait is superb... but the eyes are captivating! Thank you for including all the historical information: This is amazing. I did know about half of it, having visited an A.G.Bell historical site , but either have forgotten, or did not know the rest of the information!

Artist Reply: Thank you, cousin Julie!
