Steering Clear: Greater Detroit Leaving Mackinac

This is a scene from the late 1940's-early 50's. It shows the paddle wheel steamer the Greater Detroit in her prime leaving Mackinac Harbor headed for Lake Michigan, and eventually Chicago. The excursion boats like the Greater Detroit experienced a sharp decline after World War II ending with the last of the Great Lakes steamers the South American making her last voyage leaving Chicago on October 16, 1967.

A marvelous scene, Stanton! The waves are perfect, I can feel the breeze, the paddle wheel steamer is majestic and imposing! The background hills and buildings add a realistic touch... and the sky is superb! How you manage all this in watercolor is beyond me....

Artist Reply: Thanks for the reply Julie. Unfortunately the colors look great on my computer, but for some reason they are not reproducing well on this web site. The colors here are way too overly saturated and are as garish as can be. I want to correct the colors and try again. Please check back in a few days so you hopefully can see the painting as it was intended. I also post it on Facebook tonight.
