Self Portrait

1975 -

Every since childhood I've had the desire to create art. Leaving high school I enrolled to study fine arts in Sydney, Australia. This was the beginning of my formal study but early on I developed a working relationship between structured training and being self taught. I often chose to study components within courses while creating my own projects and working simultaneously.

Initially I concentrated on studying the human form and painting. I've always been fascinated by the artistic interpretation of the human body and found it extremely challenging. So I explored - the form; learned about the skeletal system and muscles. I spent five years going to life drawing workshops, spent hours in galleries all along focusing on establishing my place in the presence of art. I was in awe of the masters, the flesh, colours, representation - the stories contained in the images thrilled me.

In 1998 I left Sydney and went to Perth, Western Australia. I decided to learn about clay. A huge metamorphosis took place. I had visions of abstract designs. Curve, movement, colours, shapes, I would close my eyes and see these amazingly morphing images. This was the start of my journey with clay. Clay intrigues me; it's so complex with such potential for creativity, yet I find using it an almost scientific quest as well. It fulfills the scientist and artist within me. I learnt about the chemical structure of glazes, how to manipulate nature - break the rules of clay to suit my work. I played with the heating points, firing temperatures and invented new glazes.

A few years later I picked up a paintbrush again and now enjoy the balance of creating both two and three dimensional work. I find some forms of expression are best portrayed in paint, others in clay. Contemporary art now fascinates me, loving the way it transports the artist and viewer, connecting them in a joint world of imagination.

Art is my driving force. It has helped me transform treasured ideas into dynamic realities creating projects which relate to aspects of my life. Art is my discipline and I spend the majority of my days and nights creating. The result has been many exhibitions all of which have been milestones in my life.

I live and work in Sydney, Australia.
